Ruger LCP?

My buddy is going to be getting one of these for his concealed weapon, and I've been trying to do some research on them myself. I figured that I would receive some great info if I asked here, so does anyone have any opinions on this gun?

Currently a recall on them. Make sure you have the required upgrade. Info here:

TTT I'd like to get one of these (or the Kel Tec P-3AT) soon.

Re: Ruger LCP?

Recall is easy to determine by first part of the serial number. I don't have one, but have read up on lots of opinions. I'm on a waiting list. They are so popular it's hard to get one.

I don't conceal carry since my state sucks, if I could I have a G36, but the idea of wearing a front pocket holster with a gun as small as the LCP is very appealing, as we see violent crime skyrocketing.

I own one and love it. So small and so easy to carry and handle, it's not even funny. Will be my carry gun once I get my CPL.

Our local gun shop can't keep them in stock; have to get on a waiting list here if you want one. There was a recall, and I sent mine in to have the work done; they turned it around very quickly. I believe the newly-mfg LCPs now have the issue taken care of from the factory, so shouldn't be a factor for you.

Make sure you get the Crimson Trace laser sights. The LCP is so small, and the iron sights so tiny, it's very difficult to keep on target without a laser. I spent yesterday at the range, micro-adjusting the laser, and can now easily drill the bulls-eye with every shot.

The only disadvantage to the LCP is that .380 ammo can be harder to find than something like 9mm Luger. My solution was to put 1,000+ rounds on the shelf when I could, and then never worry about availability.

Re: Ruger LCP?

The info I read said that if you send in your LCP for the recall they are supposed to fix it and send it back with an additional magazine.

Everything I read rate these much better than a Kel-tec.

Re: Ruger LCP?

Own it. Love it. Got it fixed--they sent me a free mag, so I have 3 now.

Re: Ruger LCP?

The ruger LCP might be a bit more reliable 60 rounds vs 50.... but who is going to own and carry 6-7 spares for it?

The ruger LCP is over rated.

I have one. Fine conceal pistol. Be sure to practice with it prior to carry.

I never go into wall mart without it.

They're so hard to get because of the recall, but all models sold now should be fixed.

I love mine.

Re: Ruger LCP?

I own one! It was recalled, they paid postage both ways, free magazine and a cool LCP hat. First class service! Very easy to conceal in pocket holster. Wife has Beretta .380 so ammo was already available, and she does not go shooting enough.

Re: Ruger LCP?

Ruger LCP or Kel Tec P32 on my radar for immediate purchase. I'm currently carrying a 2.2lb (when loaded with 20 rounds) XDm 9mm and it's is a bit too much.

Nice gun, too bad the Sacramento Criminals deem it "not safe enough" for California.

My 13-year old daughter "picked" the LCP out for herself, but alas, we can't legally own it here.

Why is it banned for sale/ownership in CA?

It either lacks one of the faggy "safety features" required, or, it hasn't passed the Dept. of "Justice" drop tests. I didn't check. All I know is it wasn't on the "legal" to purchase list when we looked.

Ok so I decided to get one - really sweet little pistol. It is very light, it fits in the change pocket of my jeans and hides behind my belt; as long as I don't tuck my shirt in this is the most comfortable concealed carry weapon I've ever worn, I almost don't even feel it's there.

I'm going to pick up 2 of these within a couple weeks' time. My wife digs it and .380 is already a staple in the house so ammo is no problem (good luck finding .380 ammo right now!). The problem is finding these things on the shelf; I suppose gunbroker will be my method. Any suggestions on sourcing 2 LCPs?

Instead of calling all the dealers in my area I made a point to physically visit them all. On a Tuesday I found one dealer who said he was expecting some in by the end of the week and I convinced him to let me pay for it right then and there. Once they came in (Friday) I had already paid for mine, the others were gone by the end of that afternoon (I know because a friend of mine got the last one).

Be sure you get some of this to go in it. They got a few boxes in at Gander Mountain and it was in yesterday's flyer in the mail. I was there when they opened the doors:

Re: Ruger LCP?

Ooh, did not know Gander Mtn, sold that stuff. That is great .380. I ran some denim covered wet phonebook tests against the Critical Defense, Golden Sabers and (ahem) MagTech and the Critical Defense definitely put way more of a hurtin' on the books. The Golden Sabers are 102gr while the Critical Defense is only 90gr and I believe the MagTechs were 85gr.

Here's an interesting .380 cartridge comparison using a Bersa thunder .380:
http://www.geocities.com/bersa_thunder/cartridges.html

One consideration, though is the relatively short barrel on the LCP. You may actually be better off loading such a short barreled .380 with hot FMJ (Fiocchi).

Critical Defense is great ammunition. Hornady is awesome.

SLV>GLD 03-20-2009 01:29 PM

Re: Ruger LCP?

Video taught me 2 things:
Critical Defense is designed for shorter barrels.
Nickel case isn't to keep the round from adhering to an unlike metal as I had supposed.
(not entirely, anyway, same concept still).

Re: Ruger LCP?

I just got mine after waiting several months. Even though the order receipt said $300, they charged me $330. They just said take it or leave it. They weren't about to eat the price increase and there's nothing I could do about it. Hopefully I should get it out to the range next week. It looks much better than Keltec.

I was in a gun store today, and got to examine the LCP.
I liked it...not something I would find fun to shoot, but for a back up, it is well suited.
Uh...they wanted $495...that's right. Ouch! :moon:

Re: Ruger LCP?

Went by Gander Mtn to get Critical Defense.
Too bad. They got 1000rnds on Wednesday and all gone by end of day Thursday.
Seller mentioned they went with all the LCPs.
I inquired.
They got 40 LCPs on Wednesday and they, too, were all gone by end of day Thursday.
Holy Cow!

I wonder how many Ruger has sold? It's claimed that the popularity of the LCP is responsible for the major shortage of .380 Auto ammo.

That must have been for one with the laser. That's basically a $180-$190 option.

They are nice little guns. Almost an exact copy of the Kel-tek P-3AT.
Personally, I don't think they are worth the premium over the KT.

Re: Ruger LCP?

I have a little over 500 rounds through mine without a single hiccup. For its intended purpose I think it fits the bill just fine. If more .380 were available I would definitely be shooting more often. I have a few hundred rounds stocked up, but I quit buying it when the going rate for target ammo started pushing $20/ box.

Also just wanted to add that many places have put the Kel-Tec price up quite significantly to where these two guns are not really that different in price. At right around $300 I would buy the LCP over the Kel-Tec if for nothing else that the LCP has a manual slide hold open. This allows you to load a round directly into the chamber.

You are not supposed to manually load a round into the chamber with the p3at. Instead on the p3at you are supposed to chamber a round from the magazine, and add another round to the mag

The mags are pretty spendy for such simple and small mags. I can't find them for under $24ea. MidwayUSA is an easy source for them. Most local places carry them for the same price. They should not be hard to find.

You are entirely on your own with the ammo though.

CDNN is $21.99: http://www.cdnninvestments.com/rulcp386rdma.html

I found some Privi that is back ordered, but should be in, in a week. The dealer I bought the gun from has 4 boxes of Federal. I'm going to call him and ask him to hold it for me until I pick up the gun. I had no idea 380 was so hard to get. I went to Walmart looking today and the entire cabinet at the superwalmart was empty except for a couple of boxes of odd calibers.

There has been a lot of Fioshi 380 in town lately. We have about nine boxes of the stuff for practice. It is being rationed, one per customer @ $20 each.

On the other hand, I only paid $265 for the first piece and $299 for the second one.

I simply would not pay that much for Fiochi 50ct FMJ or JHP. I'm picking up boxes as I can find them but I'm letting other people have the gouges. I have no idea when my Midway backorder will ship but it is Fiochi FMJ sold at $13 a box.
